Different versions of server software will receive a different "latest version" of webtrees. Different versions of server software can support different versions of webtrees. Clicking on the link will tell you the upgrade is available automatically. Automatic Updates If there is a new version of webtrees available, a message will tell you when you log in. How do you know what version of PHP and MySQL is used? This information is included in the request for latest-version.txt. The upgrade requires a large CPU and memory usage, so if the upgrade exceeds the CPU time limit or memory of your server it will fail. How is this counted? Each time the IP address changes, it will count as a separate server. How is this counted? This will only get counted as one server. I have more than one installation of webtrees on the same server/IP address. For older versions of webtrees, we can count the IP address. By analysing the server's access logs, we can count these site IDs. Since webtrees 2.1.3, 2.0.24 and 1.7.20, this request also includes a unique/random site ID.

If an update is available, a message is displayed on the administration page. It does this by fetching a file latest-version.txt from the webtrees build-server. FAQ How do you count servers?
